The 2023 Virginia Tech Hokies Football Season Is Here
We're only a few days away from the Saturdays of September bringing the masses back to Blacksburg, Virginia for a season that many hope will be highlighted by growth and improvement. Last year marked the beginning of a new era for Virginia Tech Football, and despite prior results, Coach Pry and his Hokies are still on the path of upward momentum. New faces, new positions, and a fresh attitude will all grace Worsham Field this Saturday night. Below is our 2023 Virginia Tech Football Preseason Preview.
It's a "Great Day To Be A Hokie"
Before we dive into our previews, we wanted to give special thanks to 540 Native and Nashville Recording Artist, Adam Rutledge, who has given us the honor of using his song "Great Day To Be A Hokie" as the Official Theme Song of Hokiology!

The Hokies Special Teams
Special Teams thrived in Blacksburg, or at least they once did. As Special Teams Coordinator, Stu Holt enters his second year with a support staff of both new and returning faces, the concept known as "Beamer Ball" might just find its way back to The 540 once again.
At Virginia Tech's 2023 Media Day, Stu Holt appeared highly confident in the progress of his specialists and expressed excitement for what the aforementioned support staff has prepared for us this season. Hokies' punter, Peter Moore, who averaged 41.5 yards per punt last season, aims to harvest the benefits of his offseason dedication to improvement. He is poised to take another stride in flipping the field for his team this season. Alongside the leg of Peter Moore, the legs of Virginia Tech redshirt freshman John Love and redshirt junior Kyle Lowe will take center stage. These two Hokies are anticipated to maximize their dedicated kicking roles this season.
On one hand, there are the legs of a special teams unit aiming to execute the perfect kick. On the other hand, there are the legs of a special teams unit with the ambition of receiving that kick and returning it for a touchdown. This year the Hokies have their eyes locked in on two names that look to make an impact on the return game this season. As a returning player seeking to make an impact in returning the ball, Virginia Tech sophomore Tucker Holloway aims to build upon his prior successes. Notably, he set a single-game punt return record of 188 yards, including a touchdown, against Georgia Tech last season. Joining the returning presence of Holloway will be Jaylin Lane, a transfer from MTSU who was previously ranked as a national punt returner. Lane looks to immediately contribute to this years support staff of Stu Holts hopeful special teams unit.
When it comes to this season, be sure to keep an eye on the resurgence of what was once so prominent in Virginia Tech Football. With strengths evident across all aspects of the specialists' game, Stu Holt's confidence appears poised to reap the benefits of on-field results in this season.
The Hokies Defense
Last season, the promised lunch pail made its return to Virginia Tech Football, symbolizing the defense's intent to leave a lasting impact on opposing offenses throughout the schedule. Despite showcasing remarkable promise, circumstances weren't always in their favor, and we witnessed the conclusion of the lunch pail's triumphant return tour. Brent Pry and his staff opted to place this iconic metal box back on the shelf from which it emerged.
This season, the iconic metal box has once again been taken down from its shelf, and both Brent Pry and his defense exude confidence in their ability to achieve the impactful presence they aspired to establish last year. Anchored by a defensive front boasting an average height and weight of 6-2 and 274 pounds, this Virginia Tech unit is primed for a successful season in the trenches. Newcomer Antwuan Powell-Ryland, a transfer from Florida, has shown significant promise to become one of the driving forces on the front line this season. In tandem with him, JC Price leads a group of returning players including Norell Pollard (DT), Josh Fuga (DT), Mario Kendricks (DT), and Keyshawn Burgos, a true sophomore aiming to excel at the defensive end position this season.
Behind a voracious defensive front that is poised to dominate opposing lines, lies a steadfast core of Hokie linebackers. While the Virginia Tech linebacker corps may appear youthful, being led by redshirt sophomores Jaden Keller and Keli Lawson, their commitment to improving their skills this offseason, coupled with the seasoned guidance of seniors like Keonta Jenkins and Alan Tisdale, positions them to create a significant impact for the lunch pail defense this season.
Next up on this Hokies defensive preview will sit a predator, awaiting the perfect chance to pounce at his prey. Coined the "Cheetahs" by cornerbacks coach Derek Jones, Virginia Tech's corners are set up for what could potentially be a prosperous season within the Hokies secondary. Similar to the men in the middle, the cornerback depth of the Hokies gains its edge from its youthful energy. While Virginia Tech will bring experience to this position through individuals such as redshirt junior Dorian Strong and redshirt senior transfer from Georgia Southern, Derrick Canteen, they will be complemented by sophomore corner Mansoor Delane and a promising freshman duo of Dante Lovett and Braylon Johnson. This group of "Cheetahs" are poised to seize their opportunities on the field in the upcoming season.
Concluding our Hokies defensive preview, we keep our attention on the Virginia Tech secondary where a safety corps, built up by coach Pierson Prioleau during the offseason, has elevated itself to the next level. Guided by Hokies junior Jalen Stroman and redshirt senior Nasir Peoples, along with the rapidly ascending freshman Mose Phillips III, Virginia Tech's defense is positioned to undergo a significant transformation as a result of their collective contributions.
Undoubtedly, this season is poised to embrace the success of a young and determined Hokies defense. As the energy cultivated during offseason training, camps, and practices takes form on the field, the Virginia Tech coaching staff appears to have successfully introduced the lunch pail mindset within their defensive unit once again.
The Hokies Offense
The Virginia Tech offense is determined to rebound from a previous season marked by short-lived outcomes. Now presenting a rejuvenated core of young and talented playmakers, the infusion of new additions and adjustments to the offensive staff bodes well for the offensive progression in the second year of Tyler Bowen's system.
Conversations in the 'Burg have increasingly centered around the quarterback competition, and although crucial, the Hokies offense will be inevitably determined by the men on the front lines. This offseason brought the departure of former Virginia Tech Offensive Line Coach Jim Rudolph, who moved on to Notre Dame. While perceived by some as a loss, faith was restored in others when Ron Crook would step into familiar territory. Bringing with him a track record of success in nurturing the offensive line, Crook is anticipated to enhance the performance of his front through strategic adjustments this season.
A group of youthful yet formidable linemen is striving to elevate their game to new heights amidst this coaching transition. Boasting a starting lineup that features two redshirt freshmen and three redshirt juniors in Xavier Chaplin, Braelin Moore, Kaden Moore, Bob Schick, and Parker Clements—this Virginia Tech offensive line aims to accumulate valuable experience in the trenches this season. Their efforts will pave the way for a Virginia Tech offense teeming with talented playmakers.
At the helm of the Virginia Tech tight end corps is Hokies senior Nick Gallo who aims to make a lasting impact on and off the field during his final season in Blacksburg. While Gallo appears to secure the starting tight end role, this core runs deep for the Hokies, featuring promising young talent like redshirt freshman Benji Gosnell and sophomore Dae'Quan Wright. Leading the tight end unit this season is Stu Holt, who has diligently prepared his group to excel in the second year of the Tyler Bowen offense.
From the athletes within the trenches to those positioned on the outside, the Virginia Tech offense is primed to generate excitement with the array of playmakers at their disposal. Serving as the driving force behind this Virginia Tech offensive staff's mission is Fontel Mines. He's gradually cultivating what has the potential to become the most extensive pool of offensive talent within his wide receivers corps this season. Standing out with their wealth of experience after transferring to the Hokies this offseason, a senior contingent comprising of Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane, and Da'Quan Felton is primed to make an instant impact on the field this season. Trailing in their wake is a blend of returning receivers, with both experience and youth. This group includes Hokies senior Stephen Gosnell, junior Da'Wain Lofton, sophomore Tucker Holloway, redshirt freshman Xavier Turner-Bradshaw, and freshman Ayden Greene. Each member of this wide receivers unit is positioned to contribute to the team's offense throughout the season.
At one point, the Virginia Tech run game held significant value within their offensive arsenal. However, in more recent times, despite the apparent depth in the running back rooms, the production failed to match expectations. As the Hokies gear up for the 2023 season, a sense of optimism prevails, hinting at a positive trajectory. This transformation is highlighted by the arrival of new running backs coach Elijah Brooks and the addition of North Carolina A&T transfer Bhayshul Tuten. Their impact is further enhanced by the return of Hokies redshirt sophomore Malachi Thomas, who is making a comeback after a year of injury This running backs corps aims to infuse the rushing attack with a much-needed spark this season.
We've now arrived at the centerpiece of the offseason discussions: the man standing behind center, the Virginia Tech signal caller, in other words, the Hokies quarterback. The discourse has been considerable throughout the offseason, and with the underwhelming offensive production of the previous season, such discussions were undoubtedly warranted.
During the offseason, Virginia Tech welcomed two promising additions to their quarterback roster. First came the flip from Nebraska to Virginia Tech by William "Pop" Watson III. This served as the initial burst of excitement in the Hokies' quarterback additions. The anticipation did not stop there, as the following day brought the commitment of Baylor transfer Kyron Drones to the Virginia Tech Hokies. Both of these acquisitions have opened the door for a vigorous competition for the QB1 position, but the road after led to one man. Redshirt senior quarterback Grant Wells, who made the move from Marshall to the Hokies, contributed a foundational element to the Tyler Bowen offense. He aims to elevate his performance from where he concluded last season, positioning himself to advance in the starting role for the upcoming year. While Wells has secured the starting role, Kyron Drones is poised to make his mark within this offensive system. These two quarterbacks are set to be in a position to make regular contributions to the offense on a weekly basis.
Emerging as one of the most intriguing storylines leading into the 2023 season, all attention is fixed on the Virginia Tech offense. With a roster boasting a collection of offensive playmakers, and further bolstered by promising young talent ready to make their mark under powerful leadership, optimism is inevitable that this side of the ball will showcase noticeable improvement in the upcoming season.
